Alick Tipoti + David Bosun + Glen Mackie Printmakers from the Torres Strait Islands

Don't miss this unique exhibition of linocuts - closes this Saturday 1 June

Alick Tipoti, David Bosun and Glen Mackie are from the islands of the Torres Strait, situated between the northern tip of Australia and Papua New Guinea. These highly collected Australian artists are part of an important school of contemporary Torres Strait Islander art, with works in many significant Australian and international permanent collections.

Traditionally, small Islander audiences experienced culture through storytelling and dance. Tipoti, Bosun and Mackie are translating the knowledge and techniques derived from their traditional skill as carvers into a contemporary visual art form, based on the fine incising of complex narrative images and symbolic pattern-making into linoleum blocks and printing onto archival paper. This exhibition exemplifies the strong contemporary linocut practice of the Torres Strait printmakers.

Alick Tipoti won the 2003 and 2007 Works on Paper Prize in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award and the People's Choice Award in 2008. A large format Glen Mackie work has just been shortlisted to hang in this year’s Telstra Art Awards exhibition.

Mark Cairns and Anita Iacovella scoop the recent Borough of Queenscliffe’s 150th Anniversary Art Awards

We're very happy to announce that from a shortlist of 50 entries, Mark Cairns was awarded the Borough of Queenscliffe's Open Art Acquisitive Award of $5,000 and Anita Iacovella took out the Print Making Award of $500.

This is great recognition for two fantastic local artists. Mark and Anita along with Joel Wolter, Susan Sutton and Sisca Verwoert (who were also short-listed for the prize) are regional artists who we're proud to say exhibit regularly with Metropolis Gallery!

Paintings by Mark Cairns currently available at Metropolis Gallery

Metropolis Gallery is pleased to make available a great selection of paintings by Mark Cairns.

Mark's hyper-real paintings are calm, and the infinite sea and sky is an evocative backdrop to evidence of human persistence.

We seek to understand a perceived message in these structures but a quiet mystery envelopes them. We're drawn to the simple contemplation of shape, colour and light. Mark Cairns’ distinctly minimalist paintings are a clear example that ‘less is more’ and the artist is quick to voice a more than fleeting interest in geometric abstraction.

Geelong Picture Framers at Metropolis Gallery

Geelong Picture Framers is a busy custom-framing workshop located upstairs at Metropolis Gallery. We specialise in the conservation framing of paintings and works on paper, sentimental family treasures and memorabilia. We stretch canvases and also frame everything from posters and paintings to football jumpers and other 3D objects.

We’ll help select a frame that not only enhances the work: it’s important that the frame, matt, backing board and glass are going to help preserve it for many years to come.

Geelong Picture Framers turn your pictures into art!
